ATENEO moved a win away from its third title in the Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference men’s division after a straight-set win over Far Eastern University, 25-22, 25-20, 25-19, in Game 1 of their best-of-three Finals series Wednesday at The Arena in San Juan.
Gian Glorioso led the Blue Eagles with 15 points, while four-time UAAP MVP Marck Espejo was impressive both offensively and defensively with 14 points, 12 excellent receptions and five digs.
Game 2 is on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
“Sabi ko nga naman ‘yung energy ng FEU ‘yun ang bread and butter nila. They live and die with their energy, with their intensity,” said Ateneo coach Oliver Almadro. “So if we will match up with that intensity magkakaroon ng magandang game.”
John Paul Bugaoan finished with 13 points while Redijohn Paler got 11 markers for FEU.
Meanwhile, University of Santo Tomas survived National University, 17-25, 28-26, 20-25, 25-21, 27-25, their best-of-three battle for third series opener.
Coming from a four-set loss to Ateneo on Monday, Joshua Umandal led the Tiger Spikers with 28 points while Arnold Bautista and Juren Buro combined for 19 markers.
Madzlan Gampong had 25 points for NU while 20 markers from Fauzi Ismail. The Bulldogs played without Bryan Bagunas and James Natividad, who will see action in the UAAP beach volleyball tournament on Thursday.
