The Blue Eagles survived La Salle, 25-16, 17-25, 25-23, 26-28, 15-7, in the opener of the semifinals, while the Bulldogs whipped University of Santo Tomas, 25-21, 25-21, 25-23.
The second matches of the best-of-three semifinals are set on Monday, with Ateneo and NU looking to set a rematch of their UAAP title showdown.
Marck Espejo scored 25 points, while Antony Koyfman had 20 points in a riveting series opener as the unbeaten Blue Eagles were forced to a five-set match for the first time this conference.
Fauzi Ismail and Madzlan Gampong had 14 points each for the Bulldogs.
