ATENEO beat Emilio Aguinaldo College, 25-23, 26-28, 25-20, 25-17, on Saturday for its second win in as many matches in the Spikers’ Turf Season Two Collegiate Conference at the Philsports Arena in Pasig.
Marck Espejo led the Blue Eagles with 16 points, while Rex Intal added 14 as Ateneo handed EAC its second loss in two matches.
“I’m happy because ’yung mga players ko, kaya pala sa mga ganoong klaseng laban na trash talk and jeers,” said Ateneo head coach Oliver Almadro
“’Yung kalaban namin, they’re really jeering us, so I guess you know naman players ko, sabi ko nga sometimes there’s a thin line between kindness and being stupid, so okay ang pagiging mabait pero ‘yung kalaban sobra na yung pagjijeer so we have to fight back,” Almadro added.
“Hindi kasi kami sanay sa ganoon eh, so maybe nasimulan kami ng ganoon, hindi kami nakarecover sa pagjijeer ng kalaban but I guess nung third, fourth set, labanan natin sa trash talk, laban natin sa salita. Medyo duda ko, nagising ang mga players ko,” Almadro said.
"I told them you have to play what you’ve been practicing and if they jeered, then turn back and if you can’t help it then jeer, trash talk also. I’m not teaching how to be rude, I’m teaching how to fight back," he added.
Israel Encina led the Generals with 15 points, while Kerth Melliza contributed 12.
Ateneo will face National College of Business and the Arts on Saturday, while EAC faces NCAA rival San Beda on August 15 at Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
