ATENEO bagged its fourth straight win in the UAAP Season 80 women’s volleyball tournament, defeating University of the Philippines, 25-20, 25-22, 25-26, on Sunday at The Arena in San Juan.
Sophomore spiker Jules Samonte had 15 points as the Lady Eagles, who started the season with back-to-back losses, improved to 4-2 for a share of second spot with La Salle.
“The 0-2 start was really tough so it was either we go up, no way but up, or just stay there,” said Ateneo middle blocker Bea de Leon.
Jhoana Maraguinot also had 11 markers for the Lady Eagles, while de Leon and skipper Maddie Madayag had nine points apiece in the one-hour and 29-minute match in front of 4,629 spectators.
Ateneo will face La Salle to cap off the first round of eliminations on Saturday at the MOA Arena.
Diana Carlos scored 20 points, while Isa Molde had 16 for UP, which absorbed its fourth straight loss after winning its opening match.
