JAPAN handily defeated India, 25-17, 25-17, 25-14, on Thursday to clinch a semifinal berth in the 2015 Asian Under-23 Women’s Volleyball Championship at the Philsports Arena.

Nanaka Sakamoto scored 11 points, while Kaori Mabashi added 10 points for Japan, which despite the straight sets win claimed to have a hard time against India.

“India has tall players. It was a struggle for us. But it’s good for our team going to the semifinals,” said Japan coach Kiyoshi Abo through an interpreter.

Japan, which has yet to lose a match in the tournament, will face the winner of the Thailand-Iran quarterfinal.

Muraleedharan Shyamala Poornima tallied 12 points for India, which relished the experience playing against Japan.

“I think in the first and second set, we were able to play well. But again, when it comes to scoring the final points, that’s what we simply lack,” said India coach Vaishali Phadtare.
