Iran edges Kazakhstan in five to take top spot, push Philippines down to second place in Pool A

IRAN survived Kazakhstan, 25-20, 18-25, 25-19, 14-25, 15-13, on Sunday, relegating the Philippines to second spot in Pool A of the 2015 Asian Under-23 Women’s Volleyball Championship at the Philsports Arena.

The Iranians were on the verge of losing a place in the next round and giving the Filipina spikers the top spot in Pool A after being down 13-10 in the final set but scored the next five points to finish the match.

Iran topped Pool A with a 2-0 win-loss record followed by the Philippines with a 1-1 slate as they moved to Pool E with Japan and Chinese Taipei in the next round.

The Philippines begins second-round play against Japan on Monday followed by Chinese Taipei on Tuesday to determine the seeding for the quarterfinal round.

Neda Chamlanian and Mina Roosta added 18 points for the Iranians in sweeping Pool A.

Kazakhstan has been relegated to the battle for ninth place after going 0-2 in the preliminaries.
