India gains shot at fifth place, sends Iran to battle for seventh against the Philippines in Asian U23 volley

INDIA defeated Iran, 22-25, 25-16, 19-25, 25-20, 15-9, on Friday in the classification round of the 2015 Asian Under-23 Women’s Volleyball Championship at the Philsports Arena.

The Indians gained a shot at fifth place against Chinese Taipei, while sending the Iranians to a showdown with the Philippines for seventh spot.

Poornima Muraleedharan Shyamala scored 30 points, while Nirmala added 20 for the Indians.

Iran now faces a familiar foe in the Philippines in a battle for seventh spot on Saturday set at 10 a.m. The Iranians beat the Pinay spikers in straight sets in the preliminary round.

Roosta Mina had 19 points while Neda Chamlanian and Mahssa Kadkhoda scored 18 points each for Iran, which got off to a solid start but failed to sustain the momentum.
