THE Philippines turned back Australia, 15-25, 25-21, 25-20, 23-25, 15-11, on Monday for its first win in the 18th Asian Women's Under-19 Volleyball Championship in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.

University of the East standout Mary Anne Mendrez and National U mainstay Jasmine Nabor had 18 points apiece, with a combined 30 kills, as the Philippines evened its record after falling to South Korea, 17-25, 14-25, 17-25.

Composed of the same team that finished fourth out of eight in the Princess Cup Asean Under-18 Championship in Thailand, the Philippines look to boost its playoff chances as it battles Chinese Taipei on Tuesday.

Fifteen teams are seeing action in the eight-day tournament, with Thailand in Pool A, China leading Pool B and Japan in Pool C.

Nabor and Mendrez bounced back strong after a tough match against the Koreans where they were held to just eight and four points, respectively.

"The team knew we needed this win and they really gave it all to get it," said team manager Peter Cayco. The University of the East, National University and Arellano University selection is backed by Sonia Trading, Northstar Travel, Philippine Superliga,.
