TURKMENISTAN and United Arab Emirates’ Alnasr Sports Club scored wins on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena to join Oman and Vietnam in the winner's bracket of the classification round of the 2014 Asian Men's Volleyball Club Championship.
Turkmenistan made short work of Papua New Guinea Amoa NCD, 25-22, 25-19, 26-24, while United Arab Emirates trounced Hong Kong Green Dragon, 25-21, 25-13, 25-18.
Mekan Massarov and Dawut Nuryyev finished with 14 points, respectively, for Turkmenistan, while Gurbanmuhammet Gylychdurdyye added 13 and Arslan Yazgulyyev chipped in 10.
It was a close contest in spikes (40-37) and blocks (10-10) but it was Turkemistan's 10 service aces that made the difference as Amoa NCD had none.
Momo Taera, George David and skipper Ravuiwa Mahururau each produced 10 markers each for Papua New Guinea.
Meanwhile, Amer Almarzooqi had 19 points, including the back-to-back service aces, for UAE. Mohamed Chikhi added 15 for Alnasr Sports Club.
Cheong Hung Siu finished with 15 markers for Hong Kong.
United Arab Emirates, Turkmenistan, Oman and Vietnam will return action on Monday at the Cuneta Astrodome to determine their placings in the second round of the winner's classification match.
Successful teams in the winning group will again face each other to determine which squad place 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th.
Hong Kong, Papua New Guinea, Japan and Mongolia will play their own classification match for 13th to 16th places.
