    Power Pinoys try to secure seat in quarterfinals as they battle team from Iraq

    THE Philippine team looks to secure a place in the quarterfinals as it faces Iraq South Gas Club Sports on Thursday in the Asian Men's Club Volleyball Championship at the Mall of Asia Arena.

    The Power Pinoys downed Mongolia, 25-13, 25-23, 25-16, in the opener and need only one more win in Pool A to clinch one of the two slots in the round of eight.

    A loss, however, may put the Philippines PLDT TVolution team in a three-way tie with Iraq and Mongolia.

    Philippine team coach Francis Vicente admitted he does not know much about the Iraq team they are playing at 12 p.m. but said the Power Pinoys will look to push as hard as they can and execute their plays much quicker than in the first outing.

    “Hindi pa namin sila (Iraq) nakikita maglaro,” he said. “Pero kailangan i-push pa ang laro, ang speed, gusto ko mas mabilis pa.”

    Australian reinforcement Cedric Legrand scored 18 points for the Philippines, while William Lewis came up with 17 of the team’s 28 excellent sets while also scoring four points in the win over Mongolia.

    “Magaling sila, they kept their promise to play well and help the Philippines,” said Vicente.

    Alnakran Abdilla added 12 in their first match in the tournament and Vicente also hopes to see other locals deliver good numbers.

    Meanwhile, Lebanon (1-0) will clash with Japan (0-1) at 2 p.m. and Vietnam (0-1) battles Iran (1-0) at 4 p.m. in Pool B.

    At the Cuneta Astrodome, Kazakhstan (2-0) looks to extend its lead in Pool C as it takes on Qatar (1-0) at 2 p.m.

    Oman (1-0) faces Turkmenistan (0-1) at 4 p.m., while China and United Arab Emitares clash at 6 p.m.
