TMS Philippine Army completed a sweep of the Philippine Super Liga titles this season, scoring a repeat in a title rematch against Cignal, 25-14, 22-25, 25-17, 25-20, on Saturday at the Ynares Sports Arena for the second conference title.
Luangtonglang Wanitchaya took charge for Army and finished with 17 points, while Rachel Anne Daquis and Mary Jean Balse chipped in 16 and 13 markers, respectively.
Wanitchaya was named the MVP, while teammate Yuki Murakoshi won the award as Best Libero.
Veteran setter Tina Salak and Jovelyn Gonzaga also added eight points each for the Lady Troopers, who scored a repeat over Cignal, the losing finalists in the first conference five months ago.
"Masaya syempre kasi nakapagbigay na naman kami ng karangalan sa mother team namin, sa Army, back-to-back ito para sa amin nga sundalo," said Army coach Rico de Guzman.
The HD Spikers seemed to find their rhythm after taking a 12-10 lead in the fourth set, but Army came up with a 7-2 run to retake the lead, 17-14.
The Lady Troopers widened the gap, 22-17, and cruised to the title.
De Guzman stressed that their advantage is having a solid line up and having Salak as their setter.
"Hindi naman sa minamaliit ko 'yung Cignal pero local sa local advantage kami sa kanila kasi kami hindi lang sa import umaasa, kahit sino gumagawa," he said.
"Isa pa, 'yung setter namin mas beterano kaysa sa kalaban kaya mas advantage kami sa kabila," he said.
Chinese reinforcements Li Zhangzhan and Lei Xie finished with 15 and 14 markers, respectively for Cignal.
