LAST conference’s champion TMS Philippine Army shook off opening-game jitters and communication problems with its imports, outlasting RC Cola, 19-25, 25-15, 25-21, 25-16, on Wednesday in the Philippine Super Liga Grand Prix at Ynares Sports Arena.
"Nahirapan kami sa umpisa kasi nag-aadjust pa kami sa dalawang import," said Army coach Rico de Guzman, who has Luangtonglang Wanitchaya of Thailand and Yuki Murakoshi of Japan as reinforcements.
Jovelyn Gonzaga poured in 16 points for the Lady Troopers, while Wanitchaya added 15 and Jac Alarca contributed 11.
"Mahirap kausapin kasi hindi nakakaintindi ng tuluy-tuloy na english, kung ano lang ang ibigay sa kanila na play 'yun lang ang gagawin nila."
Already at match point after a Gonzaga hit, the Raiders scored five straight points off the Lady Troopers' errors and Chinese reinforcement Minghua Zhang two back-to-back attacks.
But Gonzaga ended the match with a spike.
Army outscored RC Cola as it registered more blocks (10-7) and scored more than half at the service line (15-6).
The imports led the way for RC Cola, with Zhang scoring 16 and Kaewbundit Sontaya adding 11.
