ARELLANO University panicked under pressure and squandered a two-set lead, recovering just in time to hold off University of San Carlos, 25-19, 25-18, 18-25, 22-25, 15-8, on Thursday in the 10th Shakey's V-League tournament at the Arena in San Juan.
The Lady Chiefs looked in firm control at the start but lost composure when USC started to fight back. They regained their bearings in the fifth, scoring five straight points, 11-5, to seize control.
"Sabi ko lang sa kanila wag sila matakot," said Arellano coach Roberto Javier, whose team evened its record to 1-1 after a four-set loss to National University in the opener.
Trailing by seven, 11-18, the Legarda-based spikers poured in eight points against one of San Carlos to tie the game, 19-all, in the fourth set.
But the Lady Warriors capitalized on AU's errors to extend the match.
"Andoon pa rin kasi ang adjustments kasi iba-iba naman ang skills nila," said Javier. "Pero wala naman akong problema sa dalawa (guest players) kasi napakabait naman nila."
Danna Henson came away with 17 points, while guest players Nerissa Bautista and Mary Jean Balse finished with 17 and 16, respectively, for the Lady Chiefs.
Suzette Panis and Chona Gesulga each had 17 markers for San Carlos, in two games in Group B.
Guest player Abigail Praca came up with 16 points and Methosheena Bate added 10.
