ARELLANO University won its men's and women's matches with Lyceum on Tuesday in straight sets to jump to the lead along with three others in the 90th NCAA volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
The Chiefs downed the Pirates, 25-21, 25-20, to gain a share of the lead with Perpetual Help and Emilio Aguinaldo College. The Lady Chiefs waylaid the Lady Pirates, 25-14, 25-17, 25-16, to surge to the top along with Perpetual Help and College of Saint Benilde with two wins apiece.
CJ Rosario, Elaine Sagun, Menchie Tubiera and Danna Henson scored eight each while the power-hitting Benrasid Latip led his team with 14 points, 10 from spikes.
San Sebastian also remained unbeaten as the Stags whipped San Beda, 25-21, 25-23, 25-15, and its women's team smashed San Beda, 25-14, 25-20, 25-9, to also seize a piece of the lead.
V-League standout Gretchel Soltones had 19 points, 15 on attacks and four on service aces, to lead the way for the SSC belles, while Richard Tolentino and Jahir Ebrahim combined for 27 hits to offset Angelo Torres' 21-hit explosion.
San Sebastian coach Roger Gorayeb was quick to caution his players about complacency.
"It's too early and the tournament gets tougher each match," said Gorayeb, who is San Sebastian's new athletic director but decided to stay as coaches of the men's and women's volley teams.
