THE De La Salle Lady Spikers are still in shock over the gruesome injury of teammate Ara Galang and Mika Reyes can only hope the team can rise above it when it competes in the UAAP Season 77 finals without their acknowledged star and leader.
Reyes bared the whole team visited Galang at the Makati Medical Center on Saturday night, hours after a four-set win over the National University Lady Bulldogs in a game that saw Galang injure her left knee at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The entire team's worst fears later came true when doctors confirmed that Galang had suffered a torn ACL and MCL, a medial meniscus tear, and a bone bruise in her left knee, possibly sidelining her for up to eight months.
“Sobrang unexpected talaga,” said Reyes in a brief interview after she watched the National Basketball Training Center (NBTC) finals on Sunday with rumored boyfriend and Ateneo star Kiefer Ravena at the Meralco Gym.
When asked how Galang is doing when the team visited her in the hospital, Reyes said the La Salle star was still as shocked as her teammates.
“Sobrang hindi pa nag-sisink-in sa kanya,” Reyes said. “Kahit ako, hindi ko pa matanggap.”
Galang’s injury came days before the Lady Spikers begin their sixth successive trip to the UAAP Season 77 women’s volleyball opposite defending champion Ateneo, which holds a thrice-to-beat edge in the finals following a sweep of the elimination round.
Even before the injury that sidelined Galang, La Salle already has a few players hurt, with Cyd Demecillo and Desiree Cheng reportedly playing through injuries.
Reyes is only hopeful Galang’s injury will inspire the team to work even harder.
“Sana maging inspiration and motivation na lang for us. Mas lalaban kami,” said Reyes.
