ALYSSA Valdez said Ateneo lacked confidence, while La Salle was much sharper in the opener of the UAAP Season 78 women’s volleyball final on Saturday at Araneta Coliseum.

“We lacked self-confidence siguro. We’re lacking the killer’s instinct in today’s game,” said Valdez.

“And they really gave us a good fight in today’s game. They’re really good and then ayun nanalo sila.”

Two-time defending champion Ateneo was on attack mode at the start of every set but title-hungry La Salle managed to get back stronger each time.

Valdez believes La Salle was able to stay sharp after being stretched to two games in the semifinals by Far Eastern University.

“I guess La Salle really prepared for us super well and they had like tuluy-tuloy na games so I think it worked on their advantage,” said Valdez, whose Lady Eagles booked a finals spot a week ago by beating University of the Philippines.

“And then they really wanna win in today’s game and it really showed in today’s game kahit na umaangat kami sa start ng game, hinahabol talaga nila. They really want to win in this game,” added the 22-year old pride of San Juan, Batangas.

Although she has made it to the finals in each of her five years in the UAAP, Valdez that the Lady Spikers’ championship experience as a whole spelled the difference.

“Siguro as compared siguro sa team ng La Salle they are really an experienced team talaga. They’ve been in the finals for how many years na din with that team, with that core. Yun siguro,” she said.

Valdez now shifts focus on the second match of the best-of-three series on Wednesday at the MOA Arena.

“On to the next game na lang siguro, that’s the goal,” she said.

“It’s been five years. We’re going at it, fighting against each other in five consecutive years, I think we really know each other how we play, how we siguro kahit expression ng mukha namin, kahit frustrated ka, kahit masaya ka alam na ng magkalaban yan,” she added.
