ATENEO standouts Alyssa Valdez, Julia Morado, and Bea de Leon are set to spearhead the national team competing in the Asian Women’s U-23 Volleyball Championship to be held in Manil from May 1-9.
Lady Eagles team manager Tony Boy Liao confirmed on Friday the three have already made a commitment to play for the squad, whose other members have yet to be named pending the conclusion of Season 77 of the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament.
“Maglalaro sina Alyssa, Julia at si Bea,” said Liao during the drawing of lots for the nine-day tournament held at the Crowne Plaza hotel.
Liao added Ateneo and champion Thai coach Tai Bundit, will help in the preparation of Team Pilipinas for the Asian meet.
Multi-titled coach Sammy Acaylar, who will call the shots for the hosts along with Roger Gorayeb, said invited players from both the UAAP and NCAA are going to comprise the squad.
A Spin.ph source who refused to be identified as he is not in a position to speak on behalf of the team, disclosed that La Salle players Ara Galang, Mika Reyes, and Kim Fajardo were also invited but have yet to make a formal reply.
Ateneo libero Denden Lazaro likewise expressed her desire to play for the team, but is no longer eligible to play as she is already 23-years-old.
“Si Denden gusto sana kaya lang hindi na pwede kasi over-age na siya, 23 na kasi siya,” said Liao.
