AFTER juggling time from the classroom to the volleyball court all these years, Alyssa Valdez now finds herself on uncharted territory - specifically behind a desk inside a four-cornered office.

From her celebrated collegiate volleyball career, the 23-year old AB Psychology graduate has now taken a regular employment as a foundation program assistant for Rebisco in Ortigas, Pasig City.

For the first time in years, the San Juan, Batangas native, who’s known not only for her volleyball skills but also for her humility and charm, felt ‘normal’ – no fans following her around, no venue bouncers escorting her.

But in exchange, she also braves the morning traffic like any regular employee as Valdez has to be at work by 8:00 in the morning.

“Sobrang traffic ‘di ko kinaya. Oh my God! ‘Di ko alam na ganoon pala ka-traffic papuntang work from Katipunan (where I stay) to Ortigas sobrang traffic,” said Valdez, who started her first day at work on Tuesday.

“Medyo mataas naman ang office namin at nasa tuktok kami ng building, wala (nang bouncers)” she added smiling.

The new office girl enjoyed her first day at the office.

“Eh first day, we had a meeting pa para ma-meet ko ang iba pang part ng group na nasa Novaliches. So ayun, I got to meet ‘yung core group ng foundation and got to roam around sa building nila,” she said.

“And siyempre ‘yung mga kailangang gawin as an employee ng company, ‘yung mga biometrics ‘yung ganoon, ‘yun ang mga ginawa ko on my first day,” Valdez added.

Valdez, who has always stepped up for her team especially during crunch time, hopes to be a vital cog as well in her new endeavor.

“I need to help them na maipagsasama-sama namin ang mga graduate na scholars saka ‘yung mga scholars ngayon na tinutulungan ng Rebisco,” she shared.

“More of assessment talaga ang ginagawa ko and try to help on new programs to stay connected sa scholars and paano sila makapagbigay ng gratitude sa Rebisco, ganoon lang,” she added. “Ako iniisip ko lang na light lang siya pero mahirap, kasi ako I’ve never been sa work na ganoon na parang office work.”

Just weeks after joining Bureau of Customs and leaving longtime Lady Eagles teammates at Bali Pure, Valdez is up for another challenge.

“Iba rin kasi na magpo-focus ka sa mga bagay na not really related about anything sa volleyball or sa school talaga. That’s the first time na lalabas din ako so it’s really challenging din talaga. Hindi ko alam kung ano ang mangyayari,” she said.

Yet despite her regular working schedule, Valdez vowed to still give her best for BoC in the Shakey’s V-League Reinforced Conference.

“Very lenient naman sila,” she said. “Sa work mayroon lang din akong kailangang i-meet na hours para sa ginagawa ko. Very open naman sila na if I have something to do with the team or with anything, okay naman sa kanila basta magawa ko lang ang task ko na dapat kong gawin.”
