ALYSSA Valdez and Jia Morado are still in doubt for the Philippine women’s volleyball team seeing action in the second leg of the ASEAN Grand Prix from October 4-6 in Sta. Rosa, Laguna.
Valdez could miss a second straight tournament in the national pool's buildup for the Southeast Asian Games as she has yet to regain her top form after being sidelined for three weeks by right ankle injury.
The three-time Premier Volleyball League (PVL) MVP returned to action on Sunday playing in limited minutes in a straight-sets Creamline win over Air Force.
Valdez said she is also scheduled to play for Creamline on October 5 against Choco Mucho in Iloilo City, which falls on the second day of the ASEAN Gradn Prix.
“I think as of now, we’re instructed that we’re also playing in Iloilo sa team,” said Valdez.
The former Ateneo star explained they are just following the instructions of team management, Rebisco, which is also the major sponsor of the national team.
“I guess may pinag-uusapan po sila. We’re here to follow din naman those instructions. As of now, kung ano ang instructions, sila ang may desisyon,” she added.
Morado, who saw action in the Thailand leg of the tourney, sat out the Creamline game after undergoing a wisdom tooth extraction.
Michele Gumabao, speaking on behalf of their ace setter, said: “Actually before national team pa lang medyo hindi na nya kaya because four teeth ang tinanggal sa kanya so she had to wait.
“So ngayon medyo recovering pa siya kasi hindi pwedeng igalaw yun eh. Hindi rin pwede i-practice kasi bubuka so she has to fully heal before she can play.”
Besides Valdez and Morado, fellow national pool members Maddie Madayag of Choco Mucho and Jovelyn Gonzaga also have games to play on Saturday next week in Iloilo.
National coach Shaq Delos Santos said the Larong Volleyball Sa Pilipinas Inc. (LVPI) is still negotiating with the club teams of the players.
“Chine-check pa namin kasi yung magiging lineup namin dahil meron kaming kailangan iconsider and dapat ayusin,” Delos Santos said. “But of course, kahit ano mangyari talagang ready 'yung team and palaban lahat yan.”
