ATENEO star Alyssa Valdez could not help but feel she is to blame as the Lady Eagles blew a chance to extend the match and bowed to La Salle in four sets in Game Two of the UAAP women’s volleyball finals on Saturday at the Araneta Coliseum.
The season MVP put Ateneo within reach of a fifth set, but also committed an error that allowed La Salle to regain control of the match.
With the Lady Spikers already at match point 24-22, Valdez showed the form that earned her the Best Server award, giving Ateneo a tinge of hope with back-to-back service aces that tied the game at 24.
But her third shot from the service line went straight into the net, and a miscue by rookie Kassarandra Gequillana on the next play sealed the victory for La Salle, 25-14, 25-20, 19-25, 26-24.
“Syempre hindi mawawala sa isang player ’yun,” said Valdez.
“Nasa amin na ang momentum, ikaw na nga ang naghabol, pero ikaw rin ang nagpa-talo.”
“Ako ang team captain pero ako rin ang nag let down sa team ko,” she added.
Valdez, also Best Scorer was frustrated that they were not able to excecute what they had prepared.
“Siguro na excite kami kasi panalo kami sa Game One against La Salle na undefeated, kaya nakaka frustrate din na hindi namin nagawa ang princatice namin,” she said.
“Nalimutan namin maglaro na happy, with unity and nawala ang heart strong namin,” she added.
Ateneo needs to win in Game Three on Wednesday at the MOA Arena to force a title decider, and the Lady Eagles skipper remains confident they can pull off the win.
“Sabi nga ni Sir Tony (Liao, Ateneo team manager), kung hindi rin naman sa dalawang service aces, wala rin nahabol,” she said.
“Siguro may purpose ang nagyari today, hopefully sa next game we can make better decisions inside the court.”
