ALAS Pilipinas Women under head coach Tai Bundit will get to pick first and as many as he wants from the 2026 PVL Draft pool this June.
In an initiative led by the Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF), Alas Women will get to expand its pool by tapping incoming pro talents to train with the existing core of the national team.
Bundit’s Alas Women picks to begin the draft ceremony will be excluded from the pool of applicants the rest of the PVL teams can choose from.
"Ang unang pipili [sa draft], national team. Let's say, labing-dalawa 'yung pinili. If there are 40 players, example, 40 players, napili 12, matitira du'n 28. Du'n lang magsisimula mag-pick sa draft pick, 'yung number one draft pick. among the 28 na lang. Hindi na kasama 'yung 12," said Liao.
"Automatic 'yung 12, hindi siya member ng club. member siya ng national team. Wala nang hawak na club du'n sa pinili ng national team kasi number one, wala siyang kontrata. Number two, hindi siya susweldo sa club. Du'n na siya sa national team," he added.
PNVF president Tony Boy Liao bared that ‘six of 10 teams’ have approved this setup, including Rebisco teams Creamline and Choco Mucho.
In effect, Bundit’s ‘drafted’ players will be solely committed to the national team as the PNVF ideally wants its incoming Alas Women players to not have concurrent obligations with PVL teams.
This is to avoid the recurrence of player-lending fiascos like in years past in which the availability of players from UAAP, NCAA and PVL teams jeopardized the formation of past national teams.
Whoever gets selected in this special draft will have their salaries covered by the PNVF for at least two years.
By then, they will get to decide whether to stay onboard with Alas Women or join the PVL.
