PHILIPPINE AIR Force completed a sweep of the volleyball competitions of the 2014 Philippine National Games by beating fancied collegiate teams on Friday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

The Airmen defeated reigning UAAP champion National University, 25-19, 26-28, 25-20, 25-11, in the men’s final, while their women’s counterpart beat UAAP runner-up De La Salle in five grueling sets, 25-22, 26-28, 20-25, 26-24, 15-7, in an exciting finale for the gold.

Playing with a veteran line-up that even included NU head coach Dante Alinsunurin, the Airmen used their experience in beating the Bulldogs, winners of the last two editions of the UAAP competitions.

“Nakapag-adjust kami kasi simula nung nag-start ang PNG, strong start kami. Pero nung second set, nag-relax kami. Hindi rin basta-basta ang NU. Back-to-back champion sila,” said Air Force coach Jasper Jimenez.

“Ang pressure nasa amin. Ang NU, laro lang sila. Na-overcome naman namin ‘yung pressure,” said Jimenez.

In other events, Southeast Asian Games gold medalist Jesson Ramil Cid of Asics, as expected, outclassed the rest of the field to bag the gold in the men’s decathlon event by collecting 7,069 points in the final day of athletics competition Thursday at the Philsports Complex.

Cid beat Ralph Gesuligan of La Salle-Dasmarinas (5,976) and Ray Cris Capuspusan of Air Force (5,878) to clinch the gold.

Narcisa Atienza of Baguio won the heptathlon gold as the Myanmar Southeast Asian Games silver medalist scored 4,949 points to beat Jeny Rose Omena of Poveda (3,384) and Jee-Ann Racoma of Cebu City (3,247).

Junrey Bano of Team Titus/Pasay won the gold in the 400m hurdles with a time of 52.11 seconds at the expense of Jose Unso of TMS/DLSU (54.99) and Jonfrey Opendo of Baguio (54.50).

In tennis, top-seeds Patrick John Tierro and Marian Jade Capadocia ruled the men’s and women’s singles final held at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

Tierro defeated teenage sensation AJ Lim, 6-4, 6-3, while Capadocia ended the run of fifth-seed Khim Iglupas with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-1 victory.
