THE Philippine women’s national volleyball team will begin its buildup for the Asian Games by seeing action in the Philippine Super Liga Invitational Conference, which kicks off on June 23.
The Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas, Inc. also announced during the PSL All-Star Spike on Tour in Baguio City that veteran Aby Marano will captain the team that will see action in the Asiad in Indonesia in August, the Asian Cup in September and the 30th Southeast Asian Games in Manila next year.
The other members of head coach Shaq delos Santos' 20-woman pool will be annoucned in the coming days.
“Sobra-sobrang saya po na pinagkalooban ako ng ganitong oportunidad. Sabi ko nga, noong kabataan ko pinangarap ko lang maging national team player pero hindi ko inasahan na maging team captain ako,” said the former La Salle star.
“Tinatanggap ko ng buong puso ang responsibilidad na ipinataw sa akin at nagpapasalamat ako sa Diyos na nanghingi ako ng pandesal pero burger ang binigay niya sa akin so doble-doble ‘yung blessings,” she added.
Marano succeeds Mika Reyes, who captained the national team in last year's Southeast Asian Games. Jovelyn Gonzaga was handed the captaincy in the 2015 SEA Games.
