ALYSSA Valdez is not concerned in taking a massive pay cut to play abroad as the Philippine volleyball star believes she’ll gain much more from her experience in international play.
The 23-year old pride of San Juan, Batangas is currently in Thailand to suit up for 3BB Nakornnont for the Thai League and will debut on January 29 against King Bangkok.
According to a reliable source, the three-time UAAP MVP will earn a monthly salary of only 30,000 baht, or roughly P42,000, in her stint starting from January up to the end of her contract in April.
The above mentioned figure falls a lot short compared to the reported six-digit salary she earned from Bureau of Customs when she played for the Shakey’s V-League Reinforced Conference for two months.
In a previous interview, Valdez was very vocal about her dream to play abroad to gain experience and help other local players get some much-needed exposure to top-level play.
“I think it’s really big kasi syempre it’s well known na here in the Philippines, ‘yung volleyball, so I think we need to level up and I think one way of doing it is players going to different countries and go back here and share everything,” she said.
“‘Yun naman ang goal (to train abroad and share the experience) and be an inspiration sa mga bata na aspiring volleyball players na kayang kaya naman (nating mga Filipinos),” she added.
The source stressed that what Valdez is doing is both inspiring and humbling.
“Napakalaking sacrifice ng ginawa ni Alyssa,” said the source. “’Yung kikitain niya doon wala pa ‘yun sa kinikita niya dito pero kasi gusto niya maka-gain ng experience para madala niya dito (sa Pilipinas).”
