THE brushes of two visual artists have started working to show the faces of 34 athletes from different sports disciplines who will make up the Heroes & Legends: Portrait of the Cordillera Athlete which will hit the gallery late this month.
Joseph Domirez, Jr. and Gladys Ann Laciste-Labsan hope to finish their work before May 26 when these hit the walls of the newly opened Podium Botique Hotel.
The second staging of the Heroes Portrait project by Eponymous-Publications and Media Works will bring in 34 active and past athletes that have won in national and international competitions.
The 34 is the first batch of athletes and the will actually be painted on canvas using acrylic and oil paints.
Domirez will do most of the 23 male athletes while Laciste-Labsan will do all the 11 female athletes honored in the art exhibit, a rare undertaking of e-Pub, which two years ago honored wushu and chess players in the Portrait of Heroes photo exhibits at SM City Baguio and University of the Cordilleras.
The athletes include boxing legend Rey Tam, three-time Olympian Hector Begeo (steeplechase), the late Olympian Gerry Dino (judo), wushu great Benjie Rivera, wushu sanda players Divine Wally and Jean Claude Saclag, wushu taolu players Ken Omengan and Daniel Parantac.
Also in the mix are mixed martial artists Mark Sangiao, Eduard Folayang, Kevin Belingon, Honorio Banario, Danny Kingad, Joshua Pacio and Edward Kelly of Team Lakay, Grandmaster-elect Haridas Pascua, car racers Carlos and Inigo Anton, PBA player Doug Kramer, pro golfer Mars Pucay, amateur golfer Paolo Luigi Wong and runner JT Gonzales.
The female athletes will have javelin thrower Erlinda Lavandia, wushu Olympics bronze medalist Marianne Mariano, Divine Wally (wushu sanda), wushu taolu players Kariza Chan and Natasha Laxamana, boxer Alice Kate Hongitan, runners Christabel Martes, Katherine Torres and Sandi Abahan, archer Kareel Meer Hongitan and volleyball player Majoy Baron.
“It will be a great event coinciding with our formal opening,” said Podium owner Melan Marquez, a runner and head of Team Podium.
As a side event, a charcoal painting of the 34 athletes will be done by Ronnie Cabilla. These works will also hit the pages Portrait of Heroes magazine which will hit the street by August.
