SUBIC — Juan Francisco "Wacky" Baniqued edged out Clifford Pusing to claim his second straight title in the 13-14 boys category of the Alaska Ironkids on Saturday.
The two finished with identical times of 42 minutes and 31 seconds in the 400-meter swim, 12-kilometer bike and 3.2-km run event.
Winner by almost a minute last year, Baniqued was glad to emerge champion anew after being pushed more this time by younger competitors, ending his seven year stint with Ironkids with another title.
"Last year, I was only 13 and my other competitors were 14, back then in the run, I almost overlapped them but today when I competed against the younger ones, they're fast too," said Baniqued, from Colegio San Agustin Binan.
"I was thinking that I was gonna pick up the pace in the last three laps but then I thought, yung last lap, I have to rest a little," he added.
Karen Manayon won the girls’ 13-14 division a year after winning bronze in Cebu, clocking 48 minutes and 27 seconds.
"Okay lang po. Masaya lang. Everyday training and hard work lang," said Manayon, who hails from Talisay City.
Kristana Deranda was second at 51 minutes and 38 seconds.
The triathlon was followed by the annual Century Tuna Underpants Run where the runners negotiated a three kilometer run in their undies.
