Jul 20, 2015
Ruben Gonzales' loss to Yen-Hsun Lu in the first reverse singles was the final nail on the coffin for the Filipino Davis Cuppers, who bowed to Chinese Taipei, 3-1, to remain in Group II.

YEN-HSUN Lu beat Ruben Gonzales in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 as Chinese Taipei won its Davis Cup tie against the Philippines, 3-1, Monday at the Kaohsiung Yangming Tennis Courts in Taiwan.

The victory of Lu propelled the Taiwanese to the finals of the Asia-Oceania Group II tie against Pakistan, the winner of which gets the chance for promotion in Group I.

The Filipinos meanwhile, remain in Group II.

The country’s lone win in the tie came after Treat Huey and Gonzales turned back Hsin-Han Lee and Hsien-Yin Peng in the doubles Saturday, 6-3, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3).

The Philippines found itself in a precarious position after Jeson Patrombon and Patrick John Tierro dropped the first two singles matches on the first day of the tie.
