STILL catching her breath from Eastbourne, Alex Eala has just 48 hours to recover before stepping into what could be the biggest match of her young career — her Wimbledon Classic debut.

The 20-year-old Filipino is set for a daunting first-round clash against defending champion Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic, all while marking her first-ever appearance at the prestigious grass-court Slam.

However, Krejcikova, 29, enters Wimbledon with questions about her health. A recent thigh injury forced her out of the Eastbourne Open — a withdrawal that opened the door for Eala’s semifinal opponent, Varvara Gracheva.

The world No. 16 also missed the first five months of the 2025 season due to a lingering back issue. After a Riyadh stint in November 2024, she only resumed full competition in the May clay season of 2025.

Her Roland Garros campaign ended early with a second-round loss to Veronika Kudermetova, while her grass-court tune-ups have been far from convincing.

Krejcikova suffered a first-round exit at the HSBC Championships in London, then reached the Eastbourne quarterfinals with wins over world No. 124 Harriet Dart and No. 164 Jodie Burrage before pulling out due to injury.

After early exits in Birmingham and Nottingham, and a quarterfinal finish in Ilkley, Eala finally found her groove in Eastbourne — charging through the qualifiers and storming all the way to the final, where she saved four match points before falling to Australia’s Maya Joint, 4-6, 6-1, 7(12)-6(10).
