    UST netters nip UP to gain solo second place

    DEFENDING champion University of Santo Tomas edged University of the Philippines, 3-2, to take second place behind first round topnotcher La Salle on Sunday in the UAAP Season 75 women’s tennis tournament at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

    Dianne Bautista and Jhie Helar scored a 6-7 (4), 7-5, 7-5 doubles win over Medelene Ramos and Joanna Peña in the deciding match to seal the win for the Tigresses.

    The Lady Maroons tied it 2-2 after Zhane Quitara stunned reigning MVP Macy Gonzales, 6-1, 6-4, in the third singles.

    Sarah Lim put UP ahead with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Zaza Paulino in the opening singles, before UST took the lead by winning the opening doubles courtesy of April Santos and Len-Len Santos, and Lenelyn Milo in the second singles match.

    The Tigresses now have a 3-1 record behind the Lady Archers’ 4-0 card, while the Lady Maroons suffered their second loss in four starts.

    National University, banking on singles players Eren Penaros, Aziel Manantan and the duo of Kim Uytico and Junnalyn Polito, nipped Ateneo, 3-2, to barge into the win column.

    In men’s play on Saturday, NU completed a sweep of the five matches against titleholder La Salle.

    The Growling Tigers also scored a sweep over Ateneo to take second place with a 4-1 record, while La Salle slipped to third at 3-2.

    In baseball, Ateneo posted a school record seventh straight win after defeating arch-rival La Salle, 9-7, at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.

    UST scored a whopping 13 runs in the seventh inning for an abbreviated 16-5 win over Adamson, while defending champion NU outlasted UP, 12-10.

    The Growling Tigers and the Bulldogs hiked their records to 5-2.

    Softball action on Saturday saw Adamson blast La Salle, 15-0, to extend its unbeaten run to nine games.

    UP stunned NU, 5-2, while Ateneo whipped UE, 5-0.
