TREAT Huey showed he can be counted upon to play without a partner as he turned back Sharmal Dissanayake, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, in their Davis Cup reverse singles match on Sunday at the Valle Verde Country Club in Pasig.

One of the top doubles players in the world, the Filipino-American tennis star flashed his singles prowess as he pounced on his weary Sri Lankan foe, who played his third match in as many days.

“It was a good test and practice for me to play a singles match,” Huey said. “I don’t play as much singles as I did before, but it’s good to be ready and be sharp in singles.”

“If I need to play (singles again) in the next tie or in the SEA Games, I’ll be ready for sure,” added the 29-year-old netter, who will represent the country in the biennial meet in Singapore this June.

The reverse singles was reduced to a best-of-three affair after the Philippines already clinched a berth in the second round behind its insurmountable 3-0 lead over the visitors during the first two days of competition.

Despite the match having no bearing, Huey, fresh from a doubles win with Fracis Casey Alcantara on Saturday, still brought his A-game as he easily took the first set behind his booming service aces and solid forehand winners en route to the win.
