TOP seed Toru Horie of Japan overpowered Charles Roberts of Thailand, 6-3, 6-0, on Thursday to head the quarterfinal cast in the boys’ section of the Phinma-PSC International Juniors Tennis Championships – Week 2 at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
India’s Udayan Bhakar downed, 6-4, 6-3, John Otico, while Japan’s Rio Noguchi whipped Marcen Gonzales, 6-2, 6-0, in the Grade 4 International Tennis Federation18-Under category event.
Morning matches were pushed back due to rains, including the match featuring girls’ top seed Khim Iglupas.
Others who advanced to the quarterfinals were Ammar Alhogbani of the US, who repulsed Pakistan’s Ali Mooraj, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1; and Thai Phongsapak Kerdlaphee, who defeated Alester Magalit of Hong Kong, 6-4, 6-4.
The 16-year-old Iglupas, who won the first leg last week, was to take on Asumi Kanazawa.
Monica Therese Cruz, Maia Balce and Frances Santiago battle Alvina Lai of Hong Kong, qualifier Thasaporn Naklo of Thailand, and Yuelin Chen of Taiwan, respectively.
Iglupas, also the winner of the recent Olivarez Cup, is trying to complete a golden double in the top-ranking junior event after beating Rifanty Kahfiani of Indonesia, 6-2, 6-4, in the finals of Week 1.
Horie, on the other hand, is also fancied to sweep the two-leg event after thwarting Yunosuke Tanaka of Japan, 6-2, 7-5, in the boys’ final of the event sponsored by the Phinma Group of Companies, Philippine Sports Commission and Mariposa Foundation, sanctioned by the Philippine Tennis Association and backed by Asiatraders Corp for the Dunlop balls.
