THE end of the road came for Patrick John Tierro on Saturday as the Filipino lost to eight seed Karunuday Singh of India, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, in the semifinals of the Olivarez Cup-Philippine men’s international tennis championship at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
After an amazing run, Tierro couldn’t pull off another upset this time with Singh breaking the former Davis Cupper four times to deny the local bet a chance of reaching the finals of the US$15,000 International Tennis Federation Futures tournament.
Under sweltering conditions, Tierro, a wild card entry here, put on a gallant stand and won the second set to tie the match.
But his last gasp came when he pulled even at 2-2 in the third and deciding set before Singh broke twice to win the match.
Singh will face third-ranked Shuichi Sekiguchi of Japan, who won over top-seed Benjamin Mitchell of Australia, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, in the finals.
