PATRICK John Tierro and Johnny Arcilla moved into the second round of the Olivarez Cup-Philippine men’s international tennis championship after beating separate foes on Wednesday at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
Tierro, a wild card entry, defeated compatriot and qualifier Calvin Charles Canlas, 7-5, 6-2, while Arcilla downed Kaewsuto Chayanon of Thailand, 4-6, 7-6, 4-1 (ret.) to advance into the next round of the $15,000 International Tennis Federation Futures event.
Tierro will face either seventh-ranked Ivo Minar of Czech Republic or Adam Hermida of Spain, while Arcilla takes on fifth-seed Andrew Whittington of Australia.
Other Filipinos in the event bowed out with Marc Reyes losing to second seed Ti Chen of Chinese Taipei, 6-4, 6-1, and former juniors standout Jeson Patrombon bowing to Cheng Yu Yu of Chinese Taipei, 6-4, 7-6.
Elbert Anasta was defeated by Punn Bodhidatta of Thailand, 7-6, 6-4, while Jurence Mendoza was outplayed by sixth seed Ivo Klec of Slovakia, 7-6, 6-4.
