ELBERT ANASTA pulled off a shocker as he stunned Davis Cup veteran Treat Huey, 6-4 7-6 (4), on Thursday in the quarterfinal round of the Philippine Columbian Association Open men’s tennis tournament at the PCA courts in Manila.
Despite being ranked higher in the tournament, the fourth-seed Anasta is considered an underdog against the seventh-ranked Huey, a veteran of many ATP Challenger Tour events abroad who is making his first appearance in the tournament.
Anasta will next face second-seed Ruben Gonzales in the semifinal round slated Saturday. Gonzales swept past former ITF juniors campaigner Jeson Patrombon, 6-2 6-2.
Anasta’s win overshadowed Johnny Arcilla’s march to the semifinals as he overcame his longtime playing partner Patrick John Tierro, 6-2 2-6 6-3.
Arcilla, a many-time winner of the tournament, broke serve in the second game of the third set to pave the way for the closely-fought encounter. He also needed eight deuces before grabbing the victory in the match between Davis Cup veterans.
“Lagi kasi kaming naglalaro, kabisado na niya ako,” said Arcilla. “Sana, bukas maka-recover ako.”
“Noong second set, gamble nang gamble si PJ, lahat ng forehand niya pumapasok. Ako naman, naging defensive masyado noong second set… Umangat (na) ako after maka-break ng 2-0 kasi maganda ang serve niya hanggang sa last point,” he said.
Arcilla will face top-seed Marc Seiber, who easily eliminated Jurence Mendoza, 6-1 6-2.
