World No. 2 Maria Sharapova edged unseeded Klara Zakopalova, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-2, on Monday to reach the quarterfinals of the French Open at Roland Garros in Paris.
Bothered by a painful right wrist, the Russian second seed had 12 double-faults and was broken thrice when serving for the match but did just enough to hold off the Czech, who had never previously gotten past the second round of any Grand Slam tournament.
Sharapova, looking to complete her Grand Slam collection, sealed the win by breaking Zakopalova’s serve. The 25-year-old has won Wimbledon (2004), US Open (2006) and Australian Open (2008) and reached the semifinals at Roland Garros in 2007 and 2011.
