Rafael Nadal advanced to the French Open semifinals with a 7-6 (4), 6-2, 6-3 victory over Nicolas Almagro on Wednesday at Roland Garros in Paris.
The Spanish Davis Cup players faced each other for the third time in the quarterfinals in Paris and the result was pretty much the same. Straight sets, no problem for superstar Nadal.
Nadal next faces another Spaniard, No. 6 David Ferrer, who disposed of No. 4 Andy Murray 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-2.
It will be Ferrer’s third semifinal appearance in a Grand Slam tournament and first in the French Open.
The other semifinal pits No. 1 Novak Djokovic of Serbia against No. 3 Roger Federer, with the Serb looking to bag his fourth consecutive Grand Slam trophy and the Swiss master eyeing a 17th major crown.
The women’s semifinal features world No. 2 Maria Sharapova of Russia against No. 4 Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic. The two faced off in the Wimbledon final last year, won by the Czech.
U.S. Open champion Samantha Stosur of Australia meets No. 21 Sara Errani of Italy in the other semi.
