RUBEN Gonzales beat Aditya Hari Sasongko of Indonesia, 6-2, 6-4, 6-4, on Friday night to even their Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group 2 first-round tie after the opening singles at the Philippine Columbian Association courts in Plaza Dilao, Manila.

Gonzales' straight-set victory kept the Philippines from falling behind 0-2 in the best-of-five tie against Indonesia after AJ Lim was forced to retire in his Davis Cup debut against David Agung Susanto due to cramps on both legs.

Susanto came away with a 3-6, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1, 1-1 (retired) victory.

Gonzales, however, rescued the hosts in the second singles and left nothing to chance, recovering from 2-3 down in the third set to put Sasongko away.

The tie continues on Saturday with the crucial doubles match putting Fil-Am veteran Treat Huey and Francis Casey Alcantara against Anthony Susanto and Sunu Wahyu Trijati.

The match is set to begin at 2 p.m.
