ROGER FEDERER defeated Andy Murray, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4, to bag his seventh Wimbledon title on Sunday.
The Swiss master matched the seven victories of American Pete Sampras at the All England Club and will regain the world No. 1 ranking from Serbia’s Novak Djokovic.
Federer also dashed the hopes of a nation hoping to see a local bet lift the trophy for the first time in 76 years. Fred Perry in 1936 was the last home player to win Wimbledon.
The 30-year-old Federer also improved his record haul of Grand Slam titles to 17.
Murray, from Glasgow, has lost thrice against Federer in Grand Slam finals. The other time he made it to a major title match was against Djokovic in the 2011 Australian Open.
