RUBEN Gonzales tries to get Philippines off to a fine start in the Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group II second round tie against Thailand when he takes on Thailand’s No. 2 Wishaya Trongcharoenchaikul on Friday at Plantation Bay Resort and Spa in Lapu Lapu City.
Gonzales, the country’s top netter for the tie with a singles ranking of 784, and 17-year-old Wishaya (914) battle in the first singles match set at 3:30 p.m. Wishaya turns 18 on Monday.
Johnny Arcilla takes on Thai No. 1 Danai Udomchoke in the second singles match.
Doubles specialist Treat Huey, meanwhile, will team up with Francis Casey Alcantara on Saturday as they face Nuttanon Kadchapanan and Pruchya Isarow at 6 p.m.
Gonzales will take on Udomchoke before Arcilla battles Trongcharoenchaikul in the reverse singles on Sunday starting at 3:30 p.m.
The teams can still change the players who will compete in the doubles and the reverse singles an hour before the matches.
