THE Philippines settled for the silver medal in the team event as Thailand swept the five gold medals in the Toyota AEC Championships, an invitational event held in place of the tennis tournament in the 2013 Southeast Asian Games.

Ruben Gonzales, Treat Huey, and Katharina Lenhert settled for the country’s lone silver after bowing to Thailand’s Peantarn Plipuech and Pruchya Isarow, 1-2, in the final of the team event held in Bangkok.

Lenhert provided the good start for the Philippines when she won over Plipuech, 6-1, 6-3, in the women’s singles. However, Gonzales lost to Isarow, 6-4, 6-4, in the men’s singles.

Thailand won the gold in the team event after Plipuech and Isarow beat Lenhert and Huey, 6-4, 3-6, 10-4, in the mixed doubles.

The Philippines also won two bronze medals in the men’s and women’s singles in the tournament organized by the Asian Tennis Federation after Myanmar decided not to hold the Olympic sport in the SEA Games.

Johnny Arcilla settled for third place when he lost to eventual silver medalist and top-seed Kittipong Wachiramanowong, 2-6, 6-1, 6-0, in the semifinals.

The second-seeded Lenhert also bowed out of the semifinals, losing 6-4, 6-2 to Kamonwon Buayam, 6-4, 6-2.
