THE Philippine Davis Cup team is not taking its foot off the gas pedal as it targets a sweep of its Asia/Oceania Group Two tie against Sri Lanka on Sunday at the Valle Verde Country Club in Pasig.
Already assured of a berth in the second round after taking a 3-0 lead by winning the doubles match on Saturday, the Filipino netters gun for no less than victories in the two reverse singles starting at 3 p.m.
“We’ll still go for five-zero to add more confidence talaga,” said non-playing skipper Roland Kraut, who’s planning to field Niño Alcantara instead of Ruben Gonzales in the second match against either Dineshkantan Thangarajah or Harshana Godamanna.
PJ Tierro, coming off a grueling five-set win over Harshana Godamanna on opening day, takes on Sharmal Dissanayake in the first match.
The 23-year-old Alcantara, who linked up with Treat Huey in turning back Dissanayake and Thangarajah in the doubles match, tests his singles prowess this time and take over from the grizzled Gonzales.
“I would rather have them play so they can gain more experience,” Kraut said. “Si Niño para madagdagan ang confidence niya sa singles.”
