    Serena Williams delivers clincher as Mavericks keep Japan Warriors winless in IPTL Manila

    THE Philippine Mavericks continued to feed off the crowd, scoring a 25-21 victory over the Japan Warriors in Day Two of the Manila leg of the International Premier League on Monday.

    The Mavericks split their first two sets, but gained enough cushion in the next two as they wound up victorious despite losing the last set.

    Serena Williams showed the way once again, winning in her two sets, in the mixed doubles with Milos Raonic against Mirjana Lucic-Baroni and Pierre Herbert, then in the singles versus Lucic-Baroni, 6-3.

    Mark Philippoussis dominated Thomas Enqvist, 6-2, in the legends singles to set the tone for the Mavericks, who notched a third straight win in four matches to regain the lead in the standings.

    The Warriors, on the other hand, remained winless in five matches.

    After Richard Gasquet lost to Philip Kohlschreiber, 3-6, the Mavericks bounced back in the next two sets where Williams scored her wins.

    That gave them the luxury to lose the last set, the men’s doubles, where Treat Huey and Edouard Roger-Vasselin bowed to Leander Paes and Herbert.

    “I love the passion. It’s a pleasure playing in front of you, guys,” Philippoussis addressed the crowd after the victory.
