THE PHILIPPINES has been given the go-signal to host the opening round of its 2013 Davis Cup Asia Oceania Group II tie against Syria owing to the civil war in the Middle East country.
Philippine Lawn Tennis Association Davis Cup coordinator Randy Villanueva said his office had already received a communication from the International Tennis Federation about the change in venue.
The PH Davis Cuppers are now set to host Syria in the first round of Group II on February 1 to 3. Although no specific venue has been selected fro the tie, Villanueva said Philta will likely hold the event outside of Manila.
The Philippines stayed in Group II of the Asia Oceania zone after reaching the finals recently where it bowed to Indonesia, 3-2. The Davis Cuppers had earlier swept their first two ties against Pacific Oceania and Pakistan, both held in home soil, respectively.
Treat Huey, who recently won the doubles competitions of the Swiss Indoors, is expected to lead the team against Syria, which was recently promoted after topping Group III.
