    Sep 13, 2013

THE Philippines dropped its first two matches against New Zealand in the opening day of the Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group II tie at the Plantation Bay Resort and Spa in Lapu Lapu City.

Ruben Gonzales suffered a heartbreaking five-set defeat to Michael Venus, 4-6, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-0, in the first singles match, setting the tone for the day.

Johnny Arcilla also bowed in the second match as Jose Statham won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, 6-4, as New Zealand moved one victory away from promotion to Group I.

Treat Huey and Francis Casey Alcantara look to salvage the Filipinos’ campaign when they compete in the doubles against Venus and Marcus Daniell on Saturday at 6 p.m.
