PATRICK John Tierro sustained his amazing run in the Olivarez Cup-Philippine men’s international tennis championship after dispatching fourth-seed Robert Ortega-Olmedo, 6-1, 6-7, 7-6, to reach the semifinals of the singles competition Friday at the Rizal Memorial tennis court.
Tierro, who is unranked and made it to the tournament as a wildcard entry, will be facing no. 8 Karunuday Singh of India in the Final Four.
Singh also pulled an upset with his 6-7, 6-3, 7-6 win over no.2 Ti Che of Chinese Taipei.
The big win by Tierro, a former Davis Cupper, puts him in line for a shot at the title in the $15,000 International Tennis Federation Futures event.
In doubles, Ruben Gonzales of the Philippines and Sonchat Ratiwatana of Thailand cruised to the finals with a straight-set victory over Mohd Assri Merzuki of Malaysia and Ivo Minar of Czech Republic, 6-2, 6-2.
