PATRICK John Tierro became the last Filipino standing in the Olivarez Cup-Philippine men’s international tennis championship singles competition when he beat Adam Hermida of Spain, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3, on Thursday for a place in the quarterfinals at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
The win put Tierro, a wild card entry, in a quarterfinal match with fourth-seeded Spaniard Roberto Ortega-Olmedo, who defeated compatriot Carlos Boluda-Purkiss, 6-3, 6-2
Johnny Arcilla bowed out of the US$15,000 International Tennis Federation Futures tournament when he lost to Australian fifth-seed Andrew Whittington, 4-6, 2-6.
In the doubles competition, top-seed Ruben Gonzales and Thai partner Sonchat Ratiwatana defeated Hermida and Shuichi Sekiguchi of Japan, 6-7, 7-5, 10-5, to reach the semifinals.
Gonzales and Ratiwatana will face Mohd Assri Merzuki of Malaysia and Ivo Minar of Czech Republic in the semifinals.
