STILL winless after two matches, the Singapore Slammers get a much-needed boost as tennis star Serena Williams makes her debut on Sunday in the Manila leg of the International Premier Tennis League.

Williams and the Slammers will be up against the Manila Mavericks as her presence on centerstage will definitely give the local crowd reasons to cheer with the celebrated Maria Sharapova not scheduled to play on Sunday.

The world No. 1 takes on Kirsten Flipkens in the women’s singles match and will join Bruno Suares in the mixed doubles against Treat Huey and Flipkins.

The Slammers are needing a win to finish the Manila leg on a high note.

Williams is only scheduled to play on Sunday with Singapore already losing two of its ties without her.

Singapore netter Lleyton Hewitt hopes the entry of Williams will turn things around for the team.

“She is going to be fantastic for our team,” Hewitt said. “In the women’s side, there are two matches that she can play. She has own so many Grand Slams so it will be good for us,” said Hewitt.
