Philippine tennis team beats Indonesia but faces daunting Fed Cup finale against Mirza-led India

THE Philippines moved one win away from promotion to Group I of the Fed Cup Asia-Oceania Zone after beating Indonesia, 2-1, on Friday at the SAAP Tennis Complex in India.

Katharina Lehnert and Anna Clarice Patrimonio completed their comeback from a set down to beat Ayu-Fani Damayanti and Lavinia Tananta, 6-7 (12), 6-4, 6-2, in the doubles to clinch the tie for the Philippines.

The Philippines, however, faces a daunting task in the finals against India, which will be led by world number one doubles player Sania Mirza.

Nevertheless, the victory over Indonesia is a boost for the Philippines’ chances in the Southeast Asian Games. The Philippines also beat Singapore in the preliminaries.

The Philippines trailed early after Patrimonio lost to Tananta, 6-3, 6-1, in the first singles but Lehnert beat Deria Nur Haliza, 6-4, 6-2, in the second singles.
