THE Philippine Mavericks didn’t disappoint the home crowd as they trounced the UAE Royals, 29-18, to cap Day One of the International Premier Tennis League (IPTL) Season 2 Manila leg on Sunday.

The Mavericks established an early lead, winning their first two games, before taking two of the last three sets to score the rout before a sizeable partisan crowd at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The Mavericks, who split their first two matches in the first leg in Japan a few days ago, hiked their win-loss total to 81-68.

Mark Philippoussis overpowered Goran Ivanisevic, 6-2, in the legends singles, before Milos Raonic turned back Tomas Berdych, 6-4, in the men’s singles as the Mavericks got off to a rousing start.

The Royals, though, gave Serena Williams a rude welcome as Kristina Mladenovic and Daniel Nestor nipped the world No. 1's partnership with Fil-Am Treat Huey, 6-5, in the mixed doubles.

"We really play well together," Williams said of his partnership with Huey. "We love playing with each other and it’s been a joy."

"We had our chances to win today and we were so close," the American tennis star added.

But that hardly mattered as Williams bounced back strong in the singles where she frustrated Ana Ivanovic, 6-3, in the highlight set of the night that left the last set as dead rubber.

Still, the Mavericks finished the match strong as Richard Gasquet and Edouard Roger-Vasselin defeated Berdych and Nestor, 6-3.
