Patrombon, Alcantara Lim fall at the first hurdle in ATP Challenger Philippine Open

JESON Patrombon, Francis Casey Alcantara, and AJ Lim all suffered first-round exits in the ATP Challenger Philippine Open at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center on Tuesday.

Patrombon lost to fifth-seeded Kimmer Coppejans of Belguim, 6-2, 6-2, while Alcantara bowed to unranked Amir Weintraub, 6-1, 6-3, joining Lim by the wayside at the end of the first day.

Lim, the top junior netter in the country, lost to unseeded David Guez of France, 6-4, 6-0, on Monday night in the $75,000 tournament organized by Sports Events Entertainment Management Inc., and sponsored by the Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Tennis Association, Cebuana Lhuillier of Jean Henri Lhuillier, Dunlop, Chris Sports, and TV5.

All three were wild card entries in the tournament.

Patrombon said Coppejans was able to show why he is ranked 127 in the world.

“Maganda ang serve niya at consistent siya. Every point, hindi siya nagbibigay ng easy points,” said the 22-year-old Patrombon.

In other results, top seed Luca Vanni of Italy beat Frederico Ferreira Silva of Portugal, 6-3, 6-2, while No. 3 Lukas Lacko of Slovakia beat Jimmy Wang of Chinese Taipei, 6-3, 6-3. No. 4 Go Soeda of Japan won over Roberto Marcora of Italy, 7-6 (4), 6-1.
